An 8-day Longcase clock by a well-known Essex maker. Now fully restored, this lovely mid 18th century clock will grace any room. The eight day striking movement is housed in an oak case. When purchased, the case had some damage and incorrect restorations. Following research on the Mason collection of Colchester clocks, the top of the case has been restored to a style common to many oak clocks by Hedge and his contemporaries. The base has also been rebuilt. It stands a little over 2 metres high without the finials. The 30 cm (12") arched dial is superb, with its matted and engraved centre, silvered chapter ring and "urn and eagle" spandrels. The silvered domed circle in the arch carries the name of Nathaniel Hedge, Colchester, who was in business on his own account from 1739 to 1772. The hands are of blued steel. (Please note that there is a small piece missing from the top of one of the dolphin spandrels in the arch.) The 8-day movement is typical of the period. It was originally a 5-pillared movement, but some vandal in the past has removed the fifth pillar. However, since this pillar performs no useful function it was decided not to replace it, and the clock is ticking happily without it.
